A Brief History of Family Corners™

In the mid-1990's, Mattel will produce a miniature family doll line that is racially diverse.  This doll line allows the child to create whatever family combination they decide upon.  By representing male and female dolls as Caucasian, African American, Asian American and Hispanic, the dolls can be mixed and matched to create a diverse family.  Wonderfully designed, the Family Corners lines provides a child the opportunity to pair one of five male or female dolls together.  The text on the back of each doll's box explains,

"Match a pretty girl with a handsome guy.  It's true love, now don't be shy.

Dress them in a tux and a wedding gown...They're the happiest couple in town!

Next a chapel wedding for the bride and groom, Then send them off on their honeymoon.

Now move them into their family home...Add special stickers to make it their own!

The time has come for a sweet surprise...A dear little baby with love in her eyes!

This bundle of joy needs a nursery...Add it to your "house" quick as 1, 2, 3!

How great to be a part of a family Where we all live together so happily!"

The male dolls consisted of Nicholas™ (Caucasian), Joey® (Hispanic), Ryan™ (Caucasian), Kurt™ (African American) and Derek™ (Asian American).  Derek™ is the hardest Family Corners™ doll to find.  Each guy was pictured (paired) with one of the five girls on the back of the box within their race, but the box text stresses that you can choose whichever bride and groom to create a family.  Inside, the instruction sheet says "Who will marry whom? You decide! There is no right or wrong choice-any combination makes a family!"   Pictured with Nicholas™ is Becky® #12652 (Caucasian), Ryan™ with Melody® #12654 (Caucasian), Joey® with Lacey™ #12653 (Hispanic), Kurt™ with Nichelle® #12655 (African American) and Derek™ with Trista® #12656 (Asian American).  Just like Barbie® and Ken®, the female dolls will be slightly shorter than their male counterparts.  The female dolls measure 6½" tall, while the males measure 6¾" tall.  All the dolls have molded on shoes (males loafers), and Joey® and Ryan™, like their female matches Lacey™ and Melody®, share the same head mold.  The male dolls also feature two different arm molds.  The right arm is bent PTS, while the left arm is straight PTR.

"I'm Nicholas but my nickname is Nick.  Get it? Nick-name.  My wife will need a good sense of humor.  I like surfing and playing the guitar." "Call me Joey.  I like sports cars and cycling and a good game of chess.  I'm looking for a wife who like romantic candlelight dinners for two." "I'm Ryan and running's my favorite sport.  Basketball, tennis, even ping pong any game will do.  I'm looking for a wife who likes sports too."  "Kurt is my name! I like hot jazz and cool clothes...and beach volleyball with my buddies, Derek and Ryan.  I want a wife and a family too." "My name is Derek.  I need a wife who loves kids-and dancing.  I'm a pretty good dancer myself, but in the daytime you'll find me at the beach!"

The female dolls came with their own listed hobbies, wedding dress and a "unique" cardboard doll house within their box that could be added to the guy doll's chapel and nursery room scenes.  Their doll houses fold out (like a book) into four room scenes that include 3-D effects as well. The male doll's chapel is on one side of the cardboard, and the nursery room scene was on the other side.  The scenes feature fold-out chapel doors and 3-D nursery room furniture.  The males are also given an extra outfit (tuxedo) for their special day, while the females have wedding dresses and veils.  Each doll wears a unique fashion for their character, and each tuxedo and wedding dress is different for each character.

Probably to make the male dolls in the line a little more desirable to the consumer, Mattel decided to package the babies with them.  Each groom had a tiny baby doll within the box that is hidden by a cardboard flap in side the box.  The box text exclaims, "Inside! A baby for you after saying "I do!".  Each baby was different and fit the ethnicity of the male-to-female "matched" counterparts with different skin tones.  The babies measure 2" tall and share the same head mold with different partial rooted hair styles and facial painting.
