The Bratz™ Dolls (a quartet of 10.5- inch dolls with attitude) won the People's Choice Toy of the Year Award at Toy Fair in February 2002, representing the best toy of the year as voted by thousands of consumers across the US. In fact, Bratz™ were again the top doll assortment during March in the U.S., Spain and France, according to NPD's TRSTS Reports, which reports on the nation's best-selling toys each month. In the report, Bratz™ in December 2001 became the #1-selling Fashion Doll Assortment.
Known as Yasmin, Cloe, Jade and Sasha, the Bratz™ are dolls with a "passion for fashion". Launched in June 2001 by MGA Entertainment [Company info: http://www.mgae.com/company.asp], the Bratz™ are fully articulated fashion dolls that provide hip and trendy alternatives to traditional dolls. Their originality resides in their ethnic diversity, their flair for today's alternative fashion and worldwide appeal. Designed for girls of all ages, The Bratz™ Dolls are inspired by modern advertising and computer anime images.

for the Fall 2002 line (named Meygan) along with two new Bratz™
"Boyz", know as Dylan™
(African American) and
Cameron™ (Caucasian). Who could have predicted that when two new
"Boyz" were added to the Bratz™ doll line, they would be an
instance success. Immediately after finding their way to store
shelves (mostly found at Target stores for $14.99), these two male teen
scene stealers literally disappeared as Bratz™ collectors and savvy dealers
caught onto the craze in the first two weeks. By the third week in
mid-July, these early release dolls (official release date was August
2002) found their way to eBay and found a steady triple inflated secondary
market value for themselves (for those collectors who didn't find them
early). This activity could have been because male dolls are new for this line, or because of the
early availability, but there is no denying that these boyz are HOT! In
the fashion doll market (including male dolls) you either have what it
takes, or you don't. The Bratz Boyz™ definitely have it! In
June 2003, two more boys are added to the line, Bratz™
"Boyz" Eitan™ (Asian)
and Koby™
(Caucasian).
In the Fall of 2003, the Bratz™ "Boyz line exploded with merchandise. The Bratz™ name was dropped, and the line was now know as just Boyz™, proving that the line could pull it's own weight. Second Editions of all four boys were available in the "Nu-Cool" line. Also, all four Boyz were available in their own "Formal Funk" line that included dressier tuxedos and a separate fashion. Six Bratz™ "Boyz fashions were also available. By Fall of 2003, another Boyz™ joined the pack, bring the total of boys to five, perhaps in competition to the five male dolls available in Mattel's My Scene™ line. Cade™, who appears to be Hispanic, completes a well diversified Boyz™ line. Cade™ comes in a Bratz Motorcycle Style Cade™ gift set that sells for $34.99. It is uncertain whether he will become part of the regular Boyz™ doll line, but I'm thinking he'll make a one-time appearance, following suit with some special one-time editions of the Bratz™ female dolls that were also available in exclusive gift sets. |

Product for 2003 includes two new Boyz, Koby™ and Eitan™ (pictured above with the second edition Cameron and Dylan). There will be deluxe versions of the boy dolls called Formal Funk, clothes and shoe packs for the guys, and even Lil Bratz™ boys. |
In 2004, four new Boyz appear in the Lil' Boyz line. Dressed in miniature versions of the Formal Funk tuxedos, Colin™ (Greek), Deavon™ (Indian-English), Lakin™ (Italian) and Mikko™ (Finnish) add even more diversity to the line.
Bratz™ have the most important element intact...broad appeal. First and foremost, they appeal to the girls that will eventually purchase them. The Bratz™ doll line fills a gap by providing even sophisticated pre-teen girls who are mostly into music, computers and other things with cool dolls to play with. With the Bratz™ dolls, MGA Entertainment seems to have the answer to the biggest challenge facing the toy industry...creating a doll line that continues to attract the 8 to 12-year-old girl. Marketed to girls from the ages of 7-12, the Bratz™ doll line has been very successful for MGA Entertainment. 2001 marked the most productive year in MGA Entertainment's history, with sales nearing $100 million.
Mattel's answer to the Bratz™ market competition may lie in a new group of teenage Barbie® "My Scene Fashion Dolls, for the 2002 holiday season. The dolls will sport trendier fashions with more modern-looking facial painting and box packaging color, which will differ from the Barbie® play line. The "My Scene" product lines will hopefully lead to a more positive second half of the year for Mattel. Mattel has made very few statements about the line, which will introduce new friends as well as current characters in the Barbie® play line. The $100,000 dollar for Ken® collectors is whether Ken® doll will be included in the new "My Scene" line? "Working models of the dolls come in very un-Barbie®-like packaging with muted tones and downplayed references to the Barbie® line. And rather than Barbie® doll's more wholesome fare, the Scene dolls wear the kind of edgy fashions that many preteens would like to wear: furry jackets, platform shoes, belly chains and imitation leather pants".

While providing the "missing link" in Dolldom, The Bratz™ line is also brave enough to provide male dolls who represent teenagers. Mattel's recent teen Generation Girl™ doll line was met with a lukewarm reception. Everyone loved the dolls, but didn't like the $19.99 price point. Sadly, the awesome male doll of this line, Generation Girl Blaine, found moderate success because of his impending, always questionable inclusion in the line. At $14.99, the success of the Bratz™ line may line in what seems to be the magical price point.
| So what else is so appealing
about the new Bratz™ Boyz? After deboxing Dylan™,
I found a bunch of stuff I really like about him!
The first thing I had to overcome was the large computer anime image head which in not proportionate to the body mold. I'm use to scale dolls like Ken®. After deboxing, the size of the head didn't bother me. In fact, it really enhances the total look of the doll after you take the baseball cap off. Dylan™ has a great display quality and stands on his own without the use of a stand. The other thing that I had to overcome was the detachable feet with pre-molded shoes, simply because I'm use to changing shoes, not feet. I found this part to be a little weird, but it was a new concept to me. The Bratz™ have given all the Boyz™ nicknames:

Most versions of all the dolls come dressed in a fashion with another one that includes shoes (feet). The fashions are awesome, and I had fun mixing them up. I thought Dylan™'s jeans looked great with his print shirt as well as his brown "leather" pants. Accessories like necklaces, belts and back packs are also included. |

Once you get use to the interesting body molds, you'll have a great time redressing. The fashions are very hip, detailed and most importantly...fashionable! Standard materials used are updated and given special treatments. The jeans show several examples of these details. Bratz Dylan's jeans include side cargo pockets, detailed stitching and have a vintage color wash. The bottom of the jeans are flared for a popular wide-leg look. Bratz Cameron's jeans have a distressed wash with small details like razor knees while the other pair has side striping and pocket details. Probably the trendiest touch is the inclusion of "leather" pants for Dylan™. The fashion is certainly where it is happenin' with these two. | Only time will tell if Mattel can capture everything teen trendy in their "My Scene" doll line, like the Bratz™ dolls already have. Mattel has shown success in other doll lines like Diva Starz®, who are similar. The new fall 2002 dolls have a new body mold and can borrow fashions from Skipper® for cross over sales. Like most collectors, I am looking forward to Mattel's interpretation. Mattel's biggest hurdle will be to capture the fashion first, which will in turn create the excitement that will begin the trend. Will the "My Scene" doll line regain the lost 8-12 year-old girl market? Whatever Mattel's feelings are about male dolls in general, spread sheets or proven sales track records are obsolete when nurturing a trend. Teen male fashions and teen male fashion dolls need to find their niche at Mattel. It's not hard to notice that the male Bratz™ dolls are already showing success. Why? Because they are everything the core consumer and fashion doll collector is looking for. |

New edition
Bratz Boyz Fall 2004 lines are now appearing
in stores. There is SO much stuff, it's going to be hard getting
it all listed, but bear with me. The big news is the newest Boyz! His name is Bryce™, and he can be found in the Secret Date™ Collection. This Limited Collector's Edition series varies with different female dolls paired with mystery male dolls. You have a 1-in-24 chance to find the Bryce™ doll, and there is two package variations. The package I bought with female doll Nevra™ (pictured below) completely covers the mystery Boyz, while other packages are clear at the bottom to show the mystery Boyz doll's shoes and the bottom of the pants. My box was harder, the clear bottom boxes are easier, since Bryce™ wears olive velvet front pants and brown shoes with black soles. Find the pants and shoes on these packages, and you'll find a Bryce™ doll. Of course this "clue" won't help you find a box that hasn't already been opened at the store. Both stores that I visited that carried the Secret Date™ Collection had boxes that were opened by eager shoppers looking for Bryce™. My box had been previously opened and retaped, and surprisingly was still there for me to buy! I'll have to admit that I opened it (again) in store, to find the Bryce, before I figured out "how" to find him. Other new Boyz™ doll collections include: Wild Life Safari™, Tokyo A Go-Go™, Flashback Fever™ and Wintertime Wonderland™. Each series has several male dolls each...for a tally of around 18 new dolls to collect. Next on my list is the Wild Life Safari™ Boyz, since they seem to be harder to find. But I might cave in and get the Winter Wonderland™ Boyz first, since they appealed to me most. I'll add Bryce™ to the Bratz Boyz page, and the new dolls when time permits!
